Coco’s Journey: A Journey of Love and Farewell

You may remember Coco, the sweet 13-year-old poodle who traveled 3,000 miles from San Bernardino, CA, to Moose Lodge Senior Pet Sanctuary last November. His journey was one filled with love, care, and the kindness of so many wonderful people who made sure he found his way to safety.

Coco’s story began in a supermarket parking lot, where he was found abandoned, left behind by a family that could no longer care for him. But his story didn’t end there. Susana Avina and Rosie Niku stepped in, determined to find him a second chance at life. Thanks to their advocacy and the generosity of our community, funds were raised, and Coco was soon on his way to us.

His cross-country journey was made possible by Grace and Dana from USA Animal Transport, who went above and beyond to ensure Coco’s comfort. They made frequent stops, showered him with love, and even contributed to his travel expenses—because, like us, they believed he deserved a happy ending.

And for a while, that’s exactly what he had.

When Coco arrived at Moose Lodge, he settled in quickly, enjoying the warmth of a soft bed, the gentle touch of loving hands, and the simple pleasure of being rocked like a baby. He loved to be held, sung to, and hand-fed his favorite treats. Though he was blind and quite ill, his spirit remained kind and gentle.

Over time, his mobility faded. First, his hind legs gave out, and then his front. But even then, he enjoyed the sunshine on his face when we carried him outside, and he always knew he was loved.

Then, one morning, Coco slipped away peacefully in his sleep. We didn’t get to say goodbye, but perhaps that was his way of sparing us the pain. He left this world quietly, knowing he was safe. Knowing he was loved.

Run free, Coco. No more sickness, no more struggle—just warmth, comfort, and endless love on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge.

We are grateful to Susana, Rosie, Grace, Dana, USA Animal Transport, and everyone who helped bring Coco home. Because of you, his last months were filled with kindness.

Coco, you will always be part of Moose Lodge. 💙🐾🌈
