Remembering Honey Bun: A Journey of Love and Compassion

At Moose Lodge Senior Pet Sanctuary, we recently experienced the heartbreaking loss of one of our cherished residents, Honey Bun (also known as Brandy). This beautiful 12-year-old Pit Bull mix came into our lives in July, through the kindness and dedication of For Blake’s Sake Rescue in Staten Island. Although Honey Bun’s family history was unknown, it was clear she had suffered neglect or mistreatment. She arrived with several significant health issues, including severe arthritis, near-total blindness, and incontinence. Despite her physical struggles, she radiated a sweet, loving nature that touched us all deeply.

A New Beginning for Honey Bun

When Honey Bun joined us, she faced numerous challenges, but we saw beyond her disabilities. From the moment she arrived, we were committed to giving her the love and care she deserved. We are all too familiar with her situation at Moose Lodge—an older dog, often overlooked due to age or health issues, but still deserving of dignity and compassion. We believe in second chances, and Honey Bun was a perfect example of why we do what we do.

During her four months with us, Honey Bun adjusted beautifully to life at the sanctuary. She quickly found her place among the other dogs, and though her blindness sometimes caused her to bump into them, she always remained calm and unbothered. Her gentle spirit and resilience shone through, even as her body began to fail her. Mealtimes were a particular joy for Honey Bun, and she relished the simple pleasures of wandering the yard, exploring with all her senses despite her limited vision.

A Compassionate Goodbye

As time passed, Honey Bun's physical condition worsened, particularly her back legs, which eventually gave out completely. It became evident that she was in pain, and despite our best efforts to manage her discomfort, it was clear that her time with us was coming to an end. We surrounded her with love and comfort, ensuring she was cared for in every possible way. On October 1, 2023, we made the difficult but compassionate decision to let her go. It was a peaceful and loving farewell, as she crossed the rainbow bridge, leaving a lasting imprint on our hearts.

Honey Bun’s story reminds us why Moose Lodge Senior Pet Sanctuary exists. Our mission is to provide a loving, supportive environment for senior dogs in need, many of whom have endured neglect, abandonment, or illness. Hospice care for these animals is a crucial part of what we do, but it comes with significant costs. The financial burden can be overwhelming from veterinary bills to specialized food, but the reward of giving these dogs the love and care they deserve makes it all worthwhile.

Continuing the Mission

Caring for dogs like Honey Bun is both a privilege and a responsibility. Her story is just one example of the many animals we care for at Moose Lodge. We are committed to providing the best possible care for each one, regardless of their age or health challenges. However, we cannot do it alone. The support of our community is vital to continue this work.

If Honey Bun’s story has touched your heart and you would like to help us in our mission, there are several ways to contribute. Donations help cover the cost of medical care, specialized diets, and other essentials for our senior pets. Every contribution, no matter the size, makes a difference in the lives of these deserving animals.

Honoring Honey Bun’s Memory

As we say goodbye to Honey Bun, we carry her memory with us. She was more than just a rescue dog; she was a testament to the resilience and love that animals can offer, even in their final days. Rest in peace, sweet Honey Bun. We will never forget you, and we look forward to meeting again someday across the rainbow bridge.
